Esomeprazole is the S-isomer of omeprazole and a proton pump inhibitor used to treat GERD, erosive esophagitis, peptic ulcer disease, and to prevent NSAID-induced gastric ulcers. It inhibits the gastric H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme, leading to potent and prolonged suppression of gastric acid secretion.
